10 Grooming Mistakes Men Make (and How to Fix Them)

Original Content from Daniel Loy Thread SG

We’ve all been there before — paying too much attention to what we wear, and too little to what’s already on our body. From hair to skin and everything in between, having a proper routine will let you look and feel fresh all year round. Here are 10 mistakes that we’ve identified in males around the world, and the simple-to-follow solutions that turn regular bloke into class-leading gentlemen.

1. Forgoing a trip to the barber’s
Unless you’re a beach surfer, forget that messy-hair-don’t-care look. A neat slick-back or side-part is always preferred in today’s context. A decent gentlemen’s barber isn’t too hard to find, and once you do land one who knows exactly what style suits you, take that relationship further by booking your next appointment after each trim.

2. Not having any hair product
When you’re at the barber, pay close attention to which hairstyling product he uses. It’ll likely be one of the following: Pomade, clay, wax or gel. Let your barber pick your poison. This takes the guesswork out of choosing the right one for yourself, and together with your new-found knowledge on how to style hair, will keep you perfectly coiffed.

3. Ignoring hand hygiene
Liquid soap was invented over a century ago, yet many men still don’t see the merits of cleansing their hands after a trip to the loo. That’s just gross. Your palms deserve better, so keep them looking and smelling clean with a coin-sized portion of soap, a good scrub and a thorough rinse. While you’re at it, clip those nails regularly for the best first impression wherever you go.

4. Using too much cologne
Fragrances for men have come a long way, adding plenty of sophistication and saying lots about one’s character. But that’s no excuse to be heavy handed on the spray. Just a quick spritz on the neck and wrists is enough for a day out. Your nose should only detect a subtle hint of fragrance; everyone else will notice the scent without choking on it.

5. Applying too little antiperspirant
Perspiration, by itself, contains almost no smell. But when it’s left to fester in a dark, damp skin area like your arm pit, you’re facing a recipe for disaster. Fortunately, you can keep the sweat and stench away by applying some antiperspirant. Be liberal in the application, especially when the weather gets unbearably hot. Sweat stains be gone!

6. Forgetting to trim/shave
There’s a fine line between suave and scraggy, and your beard’s the deciding factor. Give it a trim from time to time to keep the hair there from getting unruly, and for your own sake, put the scissors away for this task. Instead, pick a proper beard trimmer and comb that will straighten out the fuzz. That applies to your moustache as well. Seek a professional if you can’t get it done right.

7. Not shaving the right way
If you’re gonna be baby-faced, be sure to do it properly. Soften your facial hairs with hot water and a towel, and be generous with the shaving cream. Pick a fresh razor and always shave along the grain. Slap on some aftershave and you won’t have to deal with nicks, cuts and ingrown hair ever again.

8. Having no skincare regimen
Surprise surprise, some guys still think that body wash works for their mug too. Fact: It doesn’t, unless you want skin that’s stripped of oil and suppleness. Invest some money in a facial scrub, toner and moisturiser for cleaner, smoother and pimple-free skin, and if you have issues like acne or blackheads, book a trip to the beautician or dermatologist.

9. Facing a sunburn
Looking bronzed doesn’t mean looking burnt, so bring along the sunscreen whenever you’re getting more than a few minutes of sunshine. It’s better to prevent a sunburn than to treat one, but if you happen to be a victim of the scorching sun, keep some aloe vera gel handy for soothing relief.

10. Re-wearing clothes
None of the above grooming tips matter if you’re not sending your clothes to the laundry on a regular basis. Bacteria from fabric can transfer to skin, and you can be assured the resulting odour will keep people away. Always, always wash your clothing after each wear, and only resort to fabric freshener when you’re truly pressed for time.
