Golden Oldies: 70’s Fashion Trends To Borrow From Your Mum

The Swingin’ Seventies was a golden time for street fashion, and certain elements from the time are creeping back onto the runway. With so many colourful personalities, muses and trends to choose from (think the hippies from Woodstuck and the hungover humans from Saturday Night Fever) there’s a style for everyone to choose from. Read this article to find out how you can add a little 70’s twist to your contemporary wardrobe.

1. The Hipster: We all know what hippies are like: wild, care-free and nature loving. Allow that free spirit to flow through your veins. Think of the boho chic vibe of Coachella-but instead of wearing flowing silhouettes and floating fabrics for a weekend, you get to don it everyday. There’s plenty of sheer materials, lacy dresses and fringes for everyone.

2. The Discotheque: Bellbottom, flared pants, funky psychedelic prints and platform shoes-these are probably some of the words that come to your mind when the word ‘disco’ is mentioned. Well, that’s exactly what the disco style is all about! Whilst nightlife may have evolved over the years, one thing won’t change-people wanting to dance to great music without having to bump into other people too much.

3. The Mod Men: A subculture with British roots, the ‘mod’ subculture experienced several revivals throughout the Seventies. Short for the term ‘modern’, mod fashion was all the rage during the 60s, influencing even disco fashion. Colour blocking, thigh high boots and Vespa scooters were some of the more prominent elements of this trend. If you didn’t own at least a wardrobe full of shift dresses, you might as well have been an outcast.

4. A Is For Anarchy: Punk is not dead, and hasn’t been dead for a while. The ever-growing crop of punk bands will remain fashionable as long as angsty teenagers who rock along to ‘Anarchy in the UK’ inhabit the planet. Speaking of the fashion trend, it was Vivienne Westwood who spearheaded the punk/rock movement in the Seventies.
