How To Avoid Form-Fitting Faux Pas

Since its introduction into the world of fashion, form-fitting clothing has been a favourite among celebrities and other style stars on and off the red carpets. The most common examples are stockings, skinny pants, leggings and tights, but the most popular style is the bodycon dress. Short for “body conscious”, this particular type of dress was designed to show of your body shape by hugging every single curve. But how are you supposed to keep the look sexy, sultry and not bordering on trashy? Here are some ways to avoid some form-fitting paux pas:

1. Beware your underwear

Admittedly, the biggest problem when it comes to wearing such figure-hugging clothing is that it will emphasise whatever you are wearing underneath — your underwear. So if you want to avoid getting called out on your visible panty line, do choose your undies wisely.

2. Over-accessorising is a no-no

Keep the focus on the look and maintain minimal accessorising. Figure-hugging pieces, especially bodycon dresses, already function as showstoppers on their own, so it’s best to choose pieces that don’t overwhelm the entire outfit. You can also save some time on finding the right shoes, bag and jewelry by choosing simple designs and colours to complement your look.

3. Choose neutral or dark colours

Embrace the dark side… or just go neutral. Form fitting clothing follows the contours of your body like a second skin, and when you wear lighter colours, you can’t really conceal anything at all. Darker colours are a little more forgiving, especially if you’ve just begun to try such a style. Black is a classic colour that is always on trend, and wearing an all-black bodycon dress creates the appearance of a long and lean body line. Plus, for those looking to transition their daytime office looks to night-time party outfits, neutral or darker shades work better.

4. Avoid over-exposure

Though such formfitting wear was made to show off your body, you don’t have to give away everything all at once. You can still choose which assets you want to showcase. For example, pair a high-waisted skirt with a turtleneck or long-sleeved blouse and you can still show off your beautiful legs while keeping your cleavage under wraps like the classy lady you are. If you want to wear your bodycon dress at the office during the day, match with some boyfriend blazers and more conservative footwear, such as ballet flats or boots. You can even throw on a scarf for some extra coverage, whether for modesty or fighting chilly weather. Keep it classy but still sexy!
