Invest in quality essentials that fit

Pieces such as pencil skirts, pumps, button down shirts, well-fitted blazers and tailored pants in white, black or nude colours last beyond fleeting fashion trends and seasons. They are also versatile enough to be worn in and out of your workplace, perfect for both formal and informal occasions. These are the foundation items that your workwear wardrobe will be based on, so its best to select those that are of good quality, even if they may be a little pricey.

Also, take note of the fit. Good clothing for the workplace starts with the right fit, they generally make one appear more polished and professional.

Overexposure is bad

Most offices consider skirts that are about 7 to 10 centimetres above the knee to be inappropriate, so if you still wish to put on miniskirts or formal shorts, wear them with opaque tights to offset the higher hemline. Showing off your shoulders or cleavage in a low tank or tube top is not advisable as well; so do remember to layer something over for extra coverage. It also helps you to keep you warm in those cold air-conditioned office environments.

Crop tops should be worn with caution, pair them with sleek midi skirts or high-waisted tailored pants to ensure that you don’t expose that much skin. Also remember to double and triple check to see if your bra and undies are showing through your clothes, because that is not something that you would want your boss to see, right?

Colours are crucial

Numerous studies have revealed the impact that colour has on our lives, and that includes our clothes too. Dark colours symbolise power and sophistication, but can be a little overbearing and scary if worn too liberally. On the other hand, lighter hues make the wearer appear more approachable and give off a clean, polished vibe. Blue is a good colour to wear if you want to have the best of both worlds!

Dress for success

The old adage is true, “dress for the job you want, not the job you have”.

Just like in the film ‘Working Girl’, where the protagonist dresses in her boss’s clothes and takes over the position, you should also gain some fashion inspiration from what high-ranking females in your company wear. We are not telling people to be a copycat, but take cues on what they consider to be appropriate for the workplace and derive your own workwear style from there.
