Style Steal: Japanese Chic

5 closet staples to nail their style

Jmaxtree Tokyo Street Style

By Nica Dobles from THREAD PH

I just came back from a quick trip visiting my sister in Japan, and one of the things I found myself doing a lot of — aside from enjoying all the food, of course — was checking out Japanese street style.

What really struck me was that, even in 35+ degree weather, Japanese girls stayed pretty covered up. Of course, fashion varies per area — in big cities like Tokyo, especially in neighborhoods like Harajuku, style tends to be more bold and experimental. But at least in the Osaka area, most girls tended towards the long and the loose.

If you want to give yourself a break from your usual denim shorts and bodycon skirts, here are the staples you need for that effortlessly chic Japanese style:

Midi Skirts

While mini skirts aren’t out of the picture, midi skirts are the top choice for Japanese ladies. The right length falls just below your knees in a flattering, feminine fashion. As for what top to pair it with, feel free to go wild. A sweater is a -ber month appropriate choice, and you can wear it tucked out for an overall oversized silhouette, or tucked in to add a bit more definition to your figure.

Wide-Legged Pants

Japanese girls seem to prefer wide-legged pants like culottes, palazzo pants, and loose boyfriend jeans over the classic skinny jeans — and it’s really no wonder. Like midi skirts, they’re loose and comfortable, letting you move around with ease and giving you some extra coverage without being too stifling. Wear with a graphic tee or a crop top for a casual chic combo.

Layering

Japanese style loves layering. Think dresses or skirts over pants or leggings, t-shirts under spaghetti-strap tops and dresses, blazers and vests — the possibilities are endless.

Platform Shoes

Middle: ALDO Ocarelian Espadrille Sneakers

Platforms in all their iterations — boots, creepers. sneakers — are huge in Japan. After all, they give you a height boost and a little extra edge without hampering your ability to navigate those busy train stations and city streets.

Accessories

Dorothy Perkins Koala Socks | Anello Mini Backpack | Mango Wool Beret

Japanese girls love their accessories! Whether they’re quirky kawaii animal-inspired accessories or classic minimalist backpacks, these are an easy way to add some fun to your outfit. Not sure where to start? Cute stockings and socks are in, as are hair ties and berets.
