Trend Tutorial: Velvet Crush

“Florals for summer? Groundbreaking,” drawled Miranda Priestly. What about velvet? How’s that for pushing the envelope?

Velvet has always been a mainstay for fall/winter. But this time, it’s having an extended moment well into spring and summer. Many designers — from Stella McCartney to Victoria Beckham — are starting to see the potential for this lush texture to be worn beyond the winter season.

As this trend continues going strong, celebrities from Rita Ora to Kendall Jenner, Olivia Palermo to Lily Donaldson are jumping on the velvet bandwagon, along with the rest of the fashion crowd spotted on the streets of Milan, Paris, and New York.

Watch how this winter staple shapes up for summer:

  1. Slouchy Outerwear

While velvet typically only makes an appearance in fall or winter, summery versions of velvet now come in the form of bralettes, slouchy blazers, and robes that are all loose and laid-back in silhouette.

For an off-duty evening out in town, a graphic tee and velvet bomber or robe are all you need for the casual-glam look.

2. Summery Hues

Form is not the only thing you can experiment with your velvet this season. A vibrant color palette instantly transforms it into a legit Do for spring/summer. Do as Blake Lively did and try bold hues of gold, turquoise, or pink for a warm-weather update.

3. Go Short

Take on the summer heat in velvet by going short. The fabric gives your mini dresses a dramatic flair and more structure, so it looks office-appropriate when paired with pumps and a blazer or structured jacket.

4. Slip into Velvet

Slip dresses are equal parts sultry and and elegant. Dial them up a notch by opting for a velvet slip dress. For day, add a graphic tee underneath and pair with sneakers. For night, simply switch your kicks for a pair of strappy heels ankle booties and throw on a slouchy sweater a la Rihanna.

5. Embrace Prints

What’s glammer than velvet? Velvet in prints. Tiger print can be tricky to pull off even in the hands of the most skilled fashionista. But of course Alexa Chung would make it work. Her glam rock vibes in this two-piece Roberto Cavalli velvet suit takes her velvet to another level.

If animal print is too bold for you, you can’t go wrong with good old florals for spring (despite what Miranda Priestly said) or a tropical print for summer.
