When You’re Pretty Tough: Tomboy Chic

Source: Pinterest

So you’re hella tough (at least, that is how you would like to portray yourself), but you’re secretly a fluffy pink marshmallow inside. How do you reconcile these polarizing aspects of your personality? By dressing it out, of course! No, Tomboy chic has nothing to do with dressing like a boy (power to you if you love draping yourself in men’s clothes).

Yes, the ‘tomboy’ aspect of the style might involve some seemingly masculine elements, such as boxy cuts and sharp silhoettes. If anything, tomboy chic is androgyny at its finest. There’s plenty of leather, denim, and lace. Shoe-wise, the flatter the better (unless you fancy yourself a pair of faux-sneaker heels) which have been doing the rounds. The best way to describe tomboy chic would be in terms of Powerpuff Girls: combine the bubbly nature of Bubbles with the tough, rugged Buttercup and voila! You’ve got in your hands Blossom’s sass.

Look no further than tomboy chic if looking fiercely fabulous is at the top of your sartorial bucket list.

1. Jackets: Even if you live in a country which has tropical weather the entire year, sporting a jacket is never a bad idea, especially if it suddenly gets windy or an unpleasant chill sets in. Store away your floral cardigans-tomboy chic is all about tough, sturdy materials such as denim and leather. Any apparel which is matched with a jacket made from the aforementioned materials is an automatic entrant into tomboy territory.

2. Oversized Watches: We’ve seen enough of the oversized T-shirt trend. Although not likely to die out soon, we can always make place for new entrants in the ‘oversized’ category, and this time it’s watches. Whether it’s your family heirloom or simple a ladies watch which just happens to have a large dial, an oversized watch can be transformative in many way. Traditionally seen as masculine, an oversized watch lends your overall ensemble a tough edge. Mute down all other accessories and allow your timepiece to do the talking.

3. The Shirt Dress: Repeat after me: a dress shirt is NOT an oversized shirt. Unless of course, you’re petite. In that case, any shirt-like garment a few times your size becomes a dress shirt. Shirt dresses are your friend on lazy days when you do not have the energy for putting together an colour co-ordinated outfit. Infused with a slight formal touch, thanks to the collar and button down details, the shirt dress is pure minimalism. Pair up this no-fuss outfit with closed shoes, such as loafers or sneakers.

4. Flat shoes: Sorry, heel-loving ladies. Tomboy chic is a place where flats reign supreme, as well as lovers of all shoes flat. Sneakers, loafers, espadrilles, brogues, oxfords, plimsolls-there’s a whole world of flat-soled shoes just waiting to be discovered. If you’re the sporty kind of girl, wear sneakers or plimsolls. Apart from being ragingly popular, sports chic is a cool cousin of tomboy chic. If you’re bored of the same ol’ ballerina flats, espadrilles come in all textures and hues. For the more formal days, the solid coloured, pointy-tipped oxford shoes are always available. For something more grungy, a pair of shiny brogues are durable enough for daily wear.

5. Cool Backpacks: Handbags have their own place and occasion, but tomboy chic is not one of those places, at least in our book. Backpacks on the other hand are spacious, easy on your shoulders, and are a seriously cool addition to your tomboy chic ensemble. Let go of the mindset that backpacks are vessels worn only by school-attending children. Backpacks suit adults very much, especially when there’s a world of prints, textures and shapes to be played with. Ranging from the cartoonish to the preppy, backpacks are capable of housing all your essentials, and more. It’s time to ditch the overstuffed tote bag.
